CPO Classes

The CPO seal of approval is assurance to commercially owned pool and spas that their facility and their swimmers are under the supervision of trained professionals.  CPO certification courses are designed to provide individuals with the knowledge, techniques, and skills of pool and spa operations.  Including pool and spa chemistry, testing, treatment, filtration, maintenance, automatic feeding equipment, government requirements and more.

  • The CPO certification program requires participation in either a two-day class taught by a certified instructor or the blended format that combines an online Pool Operator Primer Course and a one-day Pool Operator Fusion Course.
  • The CPO certification program requires an open book exam and is valid for five years.
  • Successful completion of the certification program provides eligibility for CEU credits.

Classroom Certification

This traditional program is a two-day class that covers 14-16 hours of instruction from the PHTA Pool & Spa Operator Handbook and local codes taught by an PHTA instructor. This dynamic setting offers direct interaction with an instructor and fellow students. Students will need to pass an open book exam to earn CPO certification.

Pool Operator Primer

This online training program is the first step to earning a CPO Certification. This online curriculum follows the chapters in the PHTA Pool & Spa Operator Handbook.  Students have access to the Pool Operator Primer online course for a six-month period, which gives them the opportunity to review the material many times.  Successful completion of the Pool Operator Primer earns a Record of Completion.  The student then will need to enroll and successfully complete a Pool Operator Fusion class within six months of completing the Pool Operator Primer to earn a CPO Certification.  You can register for the Pool Operator Primer online at www.phta.org.

Pool Operator Fusion

This one-day class is offered by PHTA Instructors and is a convenient way to achieve a CPO Certification.  This one-day class is the second day of any two-day classroom CPO certification course.  You will need to sign up for the Fusion Course after completion of the Pool Operator Primer.  Students must present a Pool Operator Primer Record of Completion and successfully complete the Pool Operator Fusion class and pass the open book exam to earn the CPO Certification.

CEU Credits

PHTA has been approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training.  Beginning September 1, 2008, students successfully completing the classroom course are eligible for 1.8 CEU credits.  Those  completing the on-line Pool Operator Primer are eligible for 0.9 CEU credits and those completing the Pool Operator Fusion are eligible for an additional 0.9 CEU credits.  These credits will be distributed by the PHTA after successful completion of the course.
